Overview And Experience

Calvin C. Austin is an associate with Alvarez, Thompson & Smoak, P.A. His practice is focused on litigation.

Mr. Austin earned both his Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies and Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University through an accelerated program, becoming an attorney at the age of 23. While in law school, he was active in the Moot Court Honors Society, the Nova Trial Association, the Black Law Students Association, and served as Vice President of the Caribbean Law Students Association. He was also selected by his fellow graduates to serve as the December 2016 Graduation Speaker.

Mr. Austin brings a diverse background in both public service and private practice. Prior to joining ATS, he handled complex civil and insurance defense matters, founded his own law firm representing individuals and small businesses in civil disputes, served as a Housing Unit Attorney with Legal Aid Service of Broward County, and worked as an Attorney Advisor for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Board of Veterans' Appeals. He also gained extensive litigation experience handling contract disputes, probate matters, trusts and estates issues, and partition actions.

As a former Police Officer with the Gwinnett County Police Department and former federal attorney with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Mr. Austin offers clients a unique perspective on investigations, evidence analysis, regulatory procedures, and case evaluation. His experience in law enforcement and federal service provides valuable insight in transportation and liability defense matters, allowing him to effectively analyze complex claims, assess exposure, and develop practical litigation strategies for commercial transportation companies, insureds, and other business clients.

Mr. Austin is of Guyanese descent and was raised in a military family, living in more than eight states. Inspired by a father who served more than 20 years in the United States Coast Guard and a mother who worked as a nurse and served in the United States Air Force, he developed a strong appreciation for service, accountability, and hard work. Outside of his legal practice, Mr. Austin enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, watching movies, and trying new foods. He is a proud father of four boys.
